Cobaltite - cobaltite

The most important ore mineral of cobalt. It occurs in hydrothermal vein deposits in acidic plutonic rocks, contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits), sometimes metamorphosed stratified manganese deposits, and orthomagmatic deposits. Its idiomorphic form is an isometric crystal system, such as a regular octahedron or regular dodecahedron, and its unit cell has the characteristics of an isometric crystal system. Its atomic arrangement has both orthorhombic (rectangular) and isometric symmetry, with the former being more common. It decomposes under surface conditions to produce purple-red cobalt flowers. In Japan, the most famous product is from the Naganobori Mine (closed), Mito-cho, Yamaguchi Prefecture (now Mito-cho, Mine City). This deposit was developed as a copper deposit during the Nara period, and is said to have provided copper for casting the Great Buddha. The place name "Naganobori" is said to be a corrupted version of "Naranobori." The English name comes from the main element, cobalt.

コバルトのもっとも重要な鉱石鉱物。酸性深成岩中の熱水鉱脈鉱床、接触交代鉱床（スカルン型鉱床）、ときに変成層状マンガン鉱床、正マグマ性鉱床中などに産する。自形は正八面体・正十二面体など等軸晶系の様相を呈し、単位格子は等軸晶系のものの特徴を備え、原子配列上は斜方（直方）晶系対称相と等軸晶系対称相の両方があり、前者のほうが普通である。地表条件で分解され、紫紅色のコバルト華を生ずる。日本では山口県美東(みとう)町（現、美祢(みね)市美東町）長登(ながのぼり)鉱山（閉山）から産したものが有名。この鉱床は奈良時代に銅鉱床として開発され、大仏鋳造用の銅をまかなったといわれる。地名の「ながのぼり」は「ならのぼり」が訛(なま)ったものという。英名は主成分元素のコバルトcobaltにちなむ。
