A semi-public, semi-private special corporation established in 1959 under the Aircraft Industry Promotion Law (promulgated in 1958) to develop, produce, and sell Japan's first domestically-made civil transport aircraft, the YS11. It was dissolved in 1983. In addition to the government, the company was funded by approximately 200 private companies, including aircraft-related manufacturers, trading companies, and financial institutions. The basic research and basic design for developing the YS11 was started by the Transport Aircraft Design Research Association, a foundation established in 1957, and the company was established as a successor to this.
