...Since prehistoric times, it has played an important role as a key transportation point connecting Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau, but when Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire built his capital here, he left behind the ruins of a huge city. The main part of the ruins is a long diamond shape stretching from north to south, measuring 1,400m from north to south and 800m from east to west, and consists of four districts conveniently named "Apadana" in the north, "Acropolis" in the west, "King's City" in the east, and "Cathedral" in the south. The highest acropolis is 35m above the surrounding area. On the east is a wide, low tell called "The City of Engineers," on the west is "Daniel's Tomb," and further west across the Sha'ul River is Sha'ul Palace. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "apadāna" are listed below.
