…In 1962, a group of young filmmakers (who had only made documentaries and short films up until that point) called the “Munich Group” (later the “Oberhausen Group”) gathered at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival. They proclaimed that “Papa’s Film is Dead” and proclaimed the creation of a “New German Film.” This historic “Oberhausen Manifesto” became the starting point of the “New German Cinema.” Alexander Kluge (1932- ), Peter Schamoni, and Edgar Reitz were at the center of the group. They argued that “new freedom” was necessary to create new German films, and demanded that the government and film companies open the door to new directors, provide financial support and guarantees for debut films, and establish film schools to nurture new talent. …
