A deciduous tree of the Juglandaceae family (APG classification: Juglandaceae), it can reach a height of 25 meters and a diameter of 1 meter. Young branches are densely glandular. The leaves are pinnately compound with 9-12 leaflets, ovate-oblong, with low serrated edges, 8-12 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, and densely glandular on the mid-axis and stalk. Flowers open in May when the leaves open. Male flowers are borne on drooping catkins with 4 tepals and about 20 stamens. The female spike faces upwards, has 7-15 flowers, and has 4 tepals and a red style. The fruit (drupe) is almost spherical and about 3 cm in diameter. It is widely distributed in mountain valleys and along riverbanks in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The wood is hard and dense, so it is used for high-quality furniture and utensils. The cotyledons inside the drupe are edible. The basic species, Manchurian walnut, has a drupe with pointed ends and six blunt edges on the surface of the drupe with noticeable wrinkles. The variety, Himegurumi, also known as Otafukugurumi, has a heart-shaped or heart-ovate drupe that is slightly flattened, has a slightly thin shell, and is almost smooth on the surface.
