A folk performing art handed down in the Kitakami region of Iwate Prefecture. Formally called Nembutsu Kenmai, it is characterized by a heroic dance performed with a mask. The Onikenmai dances of the four districts of Iwasaki, Pakunokizawa, Kawanishi, and Nameta were designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan in 1993. 岩手県北上地方に伝わる民俗芸能。正式には念仏剣舞といい、面をつけて踊る勇壮な舞が特徴。岩崎・朴ノ木沢・川西・滑田の4地区の鬼剣舞が、1993年に国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されている。
