A folk performing art handed down in the Kitakami region of Iwate Prefecture. Formally called Nembutsu Kenmai, it is characterized by a heroic dance performed with a mask. The Onikenmai dances of the four districts of Iwasaki, Pakunokizawa, Kawanishi, and Nameta were designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan in 1993.
