...A city located in the Tono Basin in the center of the Kitakami Highlands in the south-central part of Iwate Prefecture. Population 28,172 (1995). In 1954, Tono Town was incorporated as a city by merging with the seven villages of Ayaori, Otomo, Tsukimoshi, Matsuzaki, Tsuchibuchi, Aosasa, and Kamigo. The central city of Tono is located in the valley of the Sarugaishi River, which flows westward, on the western edge of the Tono Basin, surrounded by the three mountains of Tono: Mt. Hayachine (1,914m), Mt. Rokkakuushi (1,294m), and Mt. Ishigami (1,038m). In the early modern period, it prospered as a castle town of the Hachinohe Nanbu Domain, and as a trading town and post town that was a junction between the inland and coastal areas. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Otomo Village" is listed below.
