Townsville

A city on the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia. It is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the northern half of the state. It is connected by rail and road to Cairns in the north, Brisbane (1,411km) in the south, and Mount Isa (918km) in the west. With the coastal area from Cairns to Makaai and the inland area from Mount Isa as its hinterland, it is a commercial and industrial port city that distributes, processes and exports agricultural and mineral products. There are various industries including meat, raw sugar, timber and copper refining. Frozen meat, raw sugar (large-scale loading facilities available), lead, zinc, refined copper, nickel and other products are exported from the port. It is home to the only university in the northern part of the state (James Cook University). Population 111,800 (estimated 1981).
