Synonymous with plain weave and plain cloth, this refers to fabrics woven in a plain weave. Depending on the thread used, there are various thicknesses, but the conventional term for very thin and light fabrics is taffeta, for thick and heavy fabrics, and for intermediate fabrics, tabby. There are tabby fabrics with two or more threads each for the warp and weft (called nanako in Japan), as well as those with patterned weaves and double tabby fabrics with a karamidate added to the ground warp to hold the patterned weft in place.
