Ise Shonin

…The head priests of Keiko-in Temple were granted imperial permission to wear purple robes and the title of shonin (priest) from the Imperial Court for each generation, and the temple was responsible for the 20-yearly Shikinen Seigu ceremony. The head priests were also called "Ise Shonin" or "Sengu Shonin." Because of their relationship with the shrine, no statues of Buddha or bells or drums were placed in the temple, but the temple was highly dignified and formal, and gained the trust of the Imperial Court and the Shogunate. It came to wield more power than the shrine priests, and had hidden influence within the Imperial family, the Toyotomi clan, and the Tokugawa clan. …
