Ochi Etsujin

Ochi Etsujin
Born in 1656 in Kaga
[Died]? A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period in Nagoya. Commonly known as Juzo (or Juzo). Alternative names: Fuzanshi, Kinka Oji. He moved to Nagoya around 1675 and ran a dyeing shop under the care of Okada Nosui, after which he became active as a member of the Nagoya Sho school. He studied under Matsuo Basho around 1684-88, and became close to Basho, accompanying him on his trips to Irako and the journey of the Sarashina Kiko, but was unable to keep up with the new realms Basho reached in his later years. After the mid-Genroku period, he retreated from the haiku world, returning in 1715, and publishing Shakubikan in 1717, and being appointed as an elder of the Sho school, but his haiku skills declined. In the same year, in anger at the group of Shiko Kagami who were carrying around Basho and using him to make money, he wrote "Fumyoja" (The Fumyoja), and Shiko wrote "The Reply to the Kezurikake" (28) and Koshihito wrote "Ino Hayata" (29) in a debate. He also edited and wrote "Haiku: Winter Farmer's Day Hibiscus Flowers Okino Sho" and others.
