Japanese: イブキトラノオ - いぶきとらのお
Ibuki tora no O - Ibuki tora no O

A perennial plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). The rhizome is thick and short. The stem is erect, 0.5 to 1 meter tall, and the basal leaves are egg-oblong with long stalks, pointed at the tip, truncate at the base, and flow down to the stalk, 8 to 20 cm long, dark green on the upper side, light green on the underside, and glabrous or hairy. The stem leaves become shorter toward the top, sessile and clasping the stem in the middle, linear with auricles in the upper part, and both have long leaf sheaths. The flowering season is from July to September, and the plant bears densely white or pale pink flowers on cylindrical spikes, with five perianths 3 mm long. There are eight stamens that are extracted from the flower. The achene is triangular, 3 mm long, black-brown and glossy. It grows in clusters in mountain grasslands from the Kanto region westward to Kyushu, and is widely distributed from the upper temperate zone to the cold zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Its name comes from Mt. Ibuki in Shiga Prefecture, where it is grown, and from its long, thin flower spikes that resemble a tiger's tail. Ezoibukitoranoo is distributed from Hokkaido to central Honshu.
