Otakara Kou - Otakara Kou

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). The stem is erect and 1-2 meters tall. There are several basal leaves, each with a long petiole. There are few stem leaves and short petioles. From July to November, racemes are borne at the top of the stem, and bloom from the bottom. The flowers are heads consisting of ray and tubular flowers that open upward and turn downward after flowering. There are 5-9 ray flowers per head. Although it is small overall, the ray flowers of the similar Metakarakou have only 1-3 per head. It grows in clusters in deep mountain streams and on damp slopes. It is distributed from the southern Tohoku region to Kyushu, Karafuto (Sakhalin), Siberia, and China.

キク科(APG分類:キク科)の多年草。茎は直立し、高さ1~2メートル。根出葉は数枚あり、いずれも長い葉柄がある。茎葉は少数で、葉柄は短い。7~11月、茎頂に総状花序をつけ、下部から開花する。花は舌状花と筒状花とからなる頭花で、上向きに開き、花が終わると下向きになる。舌状花は1頭花当り5~9個である。全体に小形ではあるが、これに似ているメタカラコウの舌状花は1頭花につき1~3個と少ない。深山の谷川や湿った斜面に群生する。東北地方南部から九州、樺太(からふと)(サハリン)、シベリア、中国に分布する。
