Toyonari Fujiwara

Japanese:
Toyonari Fujiwara
Year of death: Tenpyo Jingo 1.11.27 (766.1.12)
Year of birth: Keiun 1 (704)
A nobleman in the Nara period. The eldest son of Fujiwara no Muchimaro. His mother was the granddaughter of Abe no Mishu, the Minister of the Right, Junior Second Rank (although it is said that she is the daughter of Abe no Sadakichi or Abe no Masatora). Nakamaro was his younger brother by the same mother. His wife was Fujiwara no Fusasaki's daughter, Momono. His children included Tsugutsuna, Otonawa, and Nawamaro. He was also called Naniwa no Daijin and Yokotsuna Daijin. Renowned for his academic talents at a young age, in 723 he was appointed Uchi no Toneri and Hyobu no Jo, and the following year in 724 he was promoted to Junior Fifth Rank. He was promoted steadily thereafter, and in 737, after his father and uncles died from an epidemic (smallpox), he was the only member of the Fujiwara clan to be chosen as a councilor. In 749, he was appointed Minister of the Right and head of the Imperial Court, and in 757, he was awarded the rank of Shonii (Senior Second Rank), but after the conference to select a new Crown Prince to replace King Doso, he came into conflict with his younger brother Nakamaro. In the same year, the Tachibana Naramaro Incident broke out, and his third son Otonawa was implicated in it, so he was appointed Ingaisoushi (chief commander in chief) of Dazaifu (Dazaifu City), but he is said to have stayed at his villa in Naniwa, claiming to be ill, and did not take up his post. When Nakamaro rebelled in 764, he was restored to his position as Minister of the Right and awarded the rank of Juichii (Junior First Rank), but died just over a year later.
