There are many histories and anecdotes about Indian diamonds, which have a long history. The oldest diamond known to exist is the Briolette of India (about 90 carats), which was brought to Europe during the Second Crusade (1147-49). It is said that when Richard I (the Lionheart) joined the Third Crusade and was captured by the enemy, he used it as a ransom to free himself.
