Kitabatake Tomonori

Japanese:
Kitabatake Tomonori

A military commander in the Sengoku period. Governor of Ise. The eldest son of Harutomo. His mother was the daughter of Hosokawa Takakuni. In 1537 (Tenbun 6), he became a Junior Fifth Rank and Chamberlain, and was promoted to Gon Chunagon and Shosanmi, but resigned in 1563 (Eiroku 6) due to the death of his father. In 1558 (Eiroku 1), he fought against Nagano Fujisada, and after a peace agreement, he made his second son Tomofuji his heir. During the Eiroku years (1558-69), he advanced into northern Ise, destroying the Akahori clan. However, in 69, his younger brother, Kozukuri Tomomasa, recruited Oda Nobunaga, so he barricaded himself in Okawachi Castle (Okawachi-cho, Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture) and fought, but they made peace and Nobunaga's second son, Chasenmaru (Tomotoyo, later changed to Nobukatsu), became the heir to his legitimate son, Tomofusa, and gave him the name Tomofusa. In 70 (Genki 1), he became a monk and took the name Tenkaku or Fuchisai. In 75 (Tensho 3), he handed over the family headship to Tomotoyo and moved to Mise-yakata (Odai-cho, Taki-gun, Mie Prefecture), but there were rumors that he had been in league with Takeda Shingen and encouraged an uprising by the Kumano forces, and on November 25, 1572, he was attacked by his former retainers by order of Nobunaga and killed along with his family, thus destroying the Kitabatake clan. He was said to have been skilled in waka poetry and learned military tactics from Tsukahara Bokuden.
