…However, the successor to Muhammad's religious authority was theoretically the ijma (consensus) of all Muslims, but in practice it was entrusted to the ijma of the ulama, especially the mujtahids. What we call the Sunnites today was usually written in medieval Muslim sources as "ahl al-sunna wal-jamā'a, the people of the sunnah and jamā'a (the whole)." As this name makes clear, the Sunnites had to be the majority, and at the same time, they had to accept what the ulama recognized as the sunnah (established practice) as a result of the ijma. …
