Jan van der Heyden

Jan van der Heyden
1637‐1712
Dutch streetscape and architectural painter. Born in Gorkum, he moved to Amsterdam at a young age and learned painting from a glass painter. As the first painter to specialize in "streetscapes," he painted the landscapes of Amsterdam and other cities in the Netherlands and northwest Germany, as well as fictional, fantastical cities. His works are so detailed that contemporaries described them as "so detailed that you can see the plaster between the bricks of the buildings," and he excels in depicting the subtleties of light and shade. However, he is not always faithful to the real landscapes, and while his works are based on real motifs, he often synthesizes or alters them.
