Chugu Office

Japanese: 中宮職 - ちゅうぐうしき

A ritsuryo government office belonging to the Ministry of Central Affairs. It was established for those who became Crown Princesses (Chugu) when the Emperor ascended to the throne, such as Fujiwara Miyako (mother of Emperor Shomu) and Takano no Niigasa (mother of Emperor Kanmu). The officials consisted of one Daibu, one Suke, one Daijo, two Shojo, one Daisakan, and two Shojo. In the mid-Heian period, Chugu came to be used as an alternative name for the Empress, but in 999 under Emperor Ichijo, Empress Teishi and Chugu Shoshi were established in parallel, and the Chugu Office was established in addition to the Office of the Empress and the Office of the Empress Dowager. → Taiho Code / Yoro Code

中務(なかつかさ)省に所属する令制官司。天皇の即位に伴って皇太夫人(こうたいぶにん)（中宮）になった人のために設けられ，藤原宮子（聖武天皇母）・高野新笠(たかののにいがさ)（桓武天皇母）などに設置された。官人は大夫(だいぶ)１人・亮(すけ)１人・大進(だいじょう)１人・少進２人・大属(だいさかん)１人・少属２人の構成。平安中期には中宮は皇后の別称として使われるようになったが，一条天皇の999年皇后定子と中宮彰子が併立し，以降皇后宮職・皇太后(こうたいごう)宮職と別に中宮職が置かれた。→大宝律令／養老律令
