Okinawa Coast National Park - Okinawa Coast National Park

This quasi-national park is located in the northern part of Okinawa's main island, Okinawa Prefecture, and consists of the west coast area from Kunigami Village to Zanpa Cape in Yomitan Village, the surrounding sea area, and the land area around Mt. Nago. It was designated as a Ryukyu Government Park in 1965, but became a quasi-national park when Okinawa Prefecture was returned to the mainland in 1972, and the Kerama area was added in 1978. The Motobu Peninsula Karst area was added in 2006. The coast is known for its beautiful coral reefs, including fringing reefs and detached reefs, and the underwater scenery, which is rich in stony corals and tropical fish, and it has been designated as a marine park. However, since around 1972, an abnormal outbreak of crown-of-thorns starfish, which eat coral, has occurred in the Okinawa Islands, causing most of the stony corals to die. Since around 1980, some of the coral reefs have shown signs of recovery, but it will take many years for the coral reefs to return to their original state. In addition, the area is rich in beautiful scenic spots such as Haneji Inland Sea, Nago Castle Ruins, Manzamo, and Cape Maeda, making it the center of tourism in Okinawa. Transportation is also convenient, and there are drive-ins, golf courses, and swimming beaches along National Route 58, which runs along the coast. The additionally designated Kerama Islands waters were registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2005, and were separated and became Kerama Islands National Park in 2014. In 2016, parts of Kunigami Village (around Cape Hedo and around Yonahadake at the northern tip of Okinawa's main island) and parts of Ogimi Village (around Shioya Bay) were incorporated into Yanbaru National Park, and the area was removed from the Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park. The land area is 4,872 hectares and the marine area is 10,985 hectares.
