Originally, it was a green aqueous solution of manganate MnO 4 2- . It is used as an analytical reagent. When diluted or made acidic, it produces permanganate MnO 4 - , which is reddish purple, but when made alkaline, it becomes manganate again and the solution turns green. This appearance changes easily, like the protective coloring of a chameleon, which is why it was given this name. In the medical and pharmaceutical fields, the reddish purple aqueous solution of potassium permanganate KMnO 4 is sometimes called chameleon water.
