...This is a ceremony held once every 12 years for five days from November 15th of the lunar year of the horse. Women born on Kudaka Island, called Nanchu, between the ages of 30 and 41, qualify as Miko and join the ritual group headed by Noro to become goddesses. One month before the festival, Noro, who presides over the ritual, and Yaziku, who is a senior, lead the Nanchu who are participating in the festival for the first time to the sacred places on the island in the Okandate ceremony. On the first day of the festival, the Nanchu dressed in white robes and barefooted, led by the senior goddesses, run to the festival grounds in the evening, shouting "E-fai, E-fai," and cross the "Seven Bridges" to enter the "Nanatuya" for three days of seclusion. ...
