Hollow fiber

A chemical fiber with a hollow interior. It is also called hollow fiber or hollow thread. There are fibers with air bubbles trapped inside, fibers with continuous hollows shaped like macaroni or lotus root, and long hollows broken here and there like bamboo. The lighter the fiber, the larger the covering surface area per weight, and among chemical fibers, viscose rayon has a specific gravity of 1.53, which is heavier than acetate fiber's 1.30. Since flat fibers with a large surface area are disliked because they feel rough, a bubble-filled fiber with a lighter apparent specific gravity, which was created by trapping air bubbles in viscose rayon, was first made in France in 1922.

繊維内部が中空になっている化学繊維。中空繊維，中空糸ともいう。繊維内部に気泡を閉じ込めたもの，マカロニ状やれんこん状に連続した中空部をもつもの，および長い中空部がところどころ切れた竹のようなものがある。繊維は軽いほど重量当り大きな被覆面積をもつわけだが，化学繊維のうち，ビスコースレーヨンは比重1.53とアセテート繊維の1.30より重い。大きな表面積を有する平たい形の繊維は粗い感じがするので嫌われることから，ビスコースレーヨンに気泡を閉じ込めて見掛け比重を軽くした気泡入り繊維が1922年フランスで初めて作られた。
