Han-gou (English name)

Japanese: 邗溝 - かんこう（英語表記）Han-gou

A canal in China that connects the Chang River and the Huai River. It is said that during the Spring and Autumn Period, King Wu built a castle on the Han River (Guangling, Yangzhou) and dug a waterway from there to Huai'an via Sheyang Lake, and is also known as Shanyang Tu. In the first year of the Daye era (605) of the Sui Dynasty, the canal was renovated together with the Tongji Canal that connects the Huang River and the Huai River, and became part of the Grand Canal. Since then, as the productivity of Jiangnan increased, the canal played an important role as an artery for transporting grains, cloth, military supplies, etc. to North China and Guanzhong.

中国，チャン（長）江とホワイ（淮）河を結ぶ運河。春秋時代に呉王が邗江（広陵，揚州）に城を築き，これから射陽湖を経て淮安にいたる水路を掘ったと伝えられ，別名山陽涜ともいう。隋の大業1（605）年，ホワン（黄）河と淮河を結ぶ通済渠とともに改修が施され，大運河の一部となった。以降，江南の生産力が高まるにつれ，穀物，布帛，軍需物資などを華北，関中へ輸送する動脈として重要な役割を果たした。
