Kisenhoshi - Kisenhoshi

Japanese: 喜撰法師 - きせんほうし

A poet from the early Heian period. One of the Six Immortal Poets. Ki no Tsurayuki mentions him by name in the preface of the Kokinshu, but his origins and biography are unknown. It is tentatively assumed that he became a monk and lived in Uji. His only known work is in the Kokinshu, Zoge, "My hut is in the capital, and people call me Ujiyama." He is also said to be the author of the Kisenshiki, a book on waka poetry, but this is a later assumption.

平安時代前期の歌人。六歌仙の一人。紀貫之が『古今集』序でその名をあげて論じているが，出自，伝記ともに未詳。出家して宇治に住んだことがわずかに推定される。確実な作は『古今集』雑下の「わが庵は都のたつみしかぞすむ世をうぢ山と人はいふなり」の1首だけである。歌学書『喜撰式』の作者ともいわれるが，後世の仮託。
