A monastery located on a small island in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel, southeast of the Bay of Saint-Malo, between Normandy and Brittany in northwestern France. According to legend, the origin of the monastery dates back to 708-710, when Bishop Auber of Avranches was ordered by Archangel Michael (Saint-Michel) whom he had seen in a vision. The Normans of Normandy were Christianized in the early 10th century, but in 966 Norman monks settled here and built a Benedictine monastery.

フランス北西部，ノルマンディーとブルターニュとの間にはさまれたサン･マロ湾の南東，モン･サン･ミシェル湾上の小島にある修道院。伝承によれば708‐710年アブランシュの司教オーベールが，自ら幻視した大天使ミカエル(サン･ミシェル)の命令で，ここに礼拝堂を建てたのが起源という。ノルマンディーのノルマン人は10世紀初頭キリスト教化するが，966年ノルマン人修道士がここに住みつき，ベネディクト会修道院を建設した。
