...From about 1830, in addition to his commentaries on current affairs, he began to write biographical essays on authors (such as "Portraits of Literature" and "Portraits of Women"). In his large-scale work "Port-Royal" (1840-59), based on his public lectures in Switzerland in 1837-38, he portrayed the entire Port-Royal monastery in the 17th century, focusing on the secret religious life of the hermits who gathered at the monastery in the 17th century, as if portraying a single person. His criticisms, which he continued to publish every Monday from 1849 until the year of his death ("Causeries du Lundi", vol. 15, 1851-62; "New Mondays", vol. 13, 1863-70), are monumental works that established "modern criticism", which shifted the focus from judgment to understanding and explanation. In this work, he presents a biographical approach based on extensive research and sensitive psychological observations in a casual manner on a wide variety of subjects, including not only literary figures but also politicians and military men.
