Onishi Sozan - Onishi Sozan

...A philosopher of the mid-Meiji period. His pen name was Misaoyama. He was the third son of Masanobu Kimata, a feudal lord of Okayama. He inherited the family name of his maternal uncle Sadamichi Onishi. He studied at Doshisha University, then the Department of Theology, and graduated from the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University. He went on to graduate school and majored in ethics. During this time, he wrote The Origin of Conscience. In 1891, he became a lecturer at Tokyo Senmon Gakko (now Waseda University), where he taught philosophy, psychology, logic, ethics, aesthetics, and other subjects until 1898, and together with Shoyo Tsubouchi, he built the foundations of the Faculty of Letters at Waseda University. He edited the Rikugo Magazine and was a keen writer in the critical world, and in 1896, he organized the Teiyu Ethics Society with Masaharu Anesaki and others.

…明治中期の哲学者。号は操山。文学博士。岡山藩士木全（きまた）正修の三男。母方の叔父大西定道の家を継ぐ。同志社の普通科，神学科を経て，帝国大学文科大学哲学科卒業後，大学院に進み倫理学を専攻。この間〈良心起原論〉を執筆した。1891年東京専門学校(現，早大)講師となり，98年まで哲学，心理学，論理学，倫理学，美学などを担当し，坪内逍遥とともに早大文科の基礎を築いた。《六合（りくごう）雑誌》を編集し，評論界でも鋭筆を発揮し，96年には姉崎正治らと〈丁酉（ていゆう）倫理会〉を組織した。…
