A game of connecting words by placing the end of the previous phrase at the beginning of the next. It was popular during the Edo period. You can see how popular it was by looking at the fact that the phrases were sold commercially as nishiki-e prints. Some of the most representative ones are: "A peony with a Chinese lion and a bamboo with a tiger. Standing on the tiger is Watonai. Mr. Naito is a sagging Fuji. Saigyo looks at Fuji facing backwards. The barefoot is a clam-shaped pillar. The pillar is under the second floor and the veranda. Shitaya is a mountain katsura in Ueno. Katsura Bunji is a storyteller. A den-den drum and a sho flute..." 前の句の末尾を,次の句の最初において,ことばをつらねてゆく文字つなぎの遊戯。江戸時代に盛んに行われた。その文句が錦絵として市販されていたのをみても,それがいかに盛んであったかわかる。代表的なものの一部をあげると,〈ぼたんに唐(から)しし竹にとら,とらをふまえて和藤内(わとうない),内藤様はさがりふじ,ふじ見西行(さいぎよう)うしろ向き,むきみはまぐりばかはしら,柱は二階と縁の下,下谷(したや)上野の山かつら,桂(かつら)文治は噺家(はなしか)で,でんでん太鼓に笙(しよう)のふえ,……〉というようなものである。
