[Noun] During the Tensho era ( 1573-92 ), the shipowners of Otsu on Lake Biwa cooperated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi by building 100 ships for him, and in return were given the privilege of shipping on the lake. Since then, they played a central role in water transport on Lake Biwa throughout the early modern period.
