A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). Males are about 60cm long, females about 38cm long. Males have long tails. For this reason, they are called long-tailed ducks in the UK. They breed in the tundra of the Eurasian continent and the far north of North America, and in winter they migrate to the northern Pacific Ocean, the northern Atlantic Ocean, and the Great Lakes of North America, spending most of their time at sea. They also migrate to Japan as winter birds, and are commonly seen in the seas of northern Japan, but are extremely rare south of central Honshu. They have well-developed diving abilities, and can usually stay submerged for 30 to 50 seconds, with a maximum of about 2 minutes, and can dive as deep as about 60m.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長雄約60cm，雌約38cm。雄は尾が長い。このためイギリスではlong‐tailed duckと呼ばれる。ユーラシア大陸，北アメリカの極北地方のツンドラで繁殖し，冬期には太平洋北部，大西洋北部，北アメリカ五大湖などへ渡り，おもに海上で過ごす。日本にも冬鳥として渡来し，北日本の海上ではふつうに見られるが，本州中部以南ではきわめてまれ。潜水能力がよく発達していて，ふつう30～50秒，最大2分程度は潜っていることができ，60mくらいまで深く潜ることもある。
