Vogelsberg

...The Middle Mountains region includes the Upper Rhine Graben, which was submerged by fault movement and separated the Black Forest from the Vosges Mountains, and its northern extension, the Rhine Graben. Volcanic activity also occurred along with tectonic movements, and the Vogelsberg in Hesse still retains its outline today, while the remains of a basalt plateau occupy the higher parts of the Rhen Mountains and the Westerwald in the Rhenish Schist Mountains. The maars (craters) in the Eifel Hills were formed around 10,000 years ago, and are evidence that volcanic activity continues to this day.
