Osugidani - Oosugidani

Japanese:
Osugidani - Oosugidani

A valley in the upper reaches of the Miyagawa River in the mid-west of Mie Prefecture. It is a V-shaped valley carved deeply into the northeastern slope of Mt. Hidegatake, the highest peak in the Odaigahara mountain range, and is part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. At the bottom of the steep cliffs covered in virgin forest stretches for about seven kilometers, there are spectacular waterfalls, deep pools, and rapids. The scenery and thrills are overwhelming, with many waterfalls including Senpiro Falls (a drop of 200 meters), cliffs over 100 meters such as Byodogura, and nearly 20 suspension bridges. There is also the Osugidani Forest Camp Village.

Since it has been land since the Tertiary Period, and because it has been protected as a Shinto shrine forest and national forest, it is one of the precious virgin forests remaining in Japan. There is a wide variety of plants, covering the main plant distributions of the Japanese archipelago, from subtropical to subarctic vertically, and from Manchuria-Korean temperate subregion to cold regions horizontally. There is a town bus service from Misedani Station on the JR Kisei Main Line to Osugi. Intermediate to advanced mountain climbing course.
