Japanese: 上津江[村] - かみつえ
Kamitsue [village] - Kamitsue
A village in Hita County, western Oita Prefecture. Population 1,407 (1995). It borders Kumamoto Prefecture to the east, south, and west. Mt. Chiigo (911m) is in the center, Mt. Shuten-Doji (1,181m) in the west, and Mt. Ono (1,041m) in the south. The Kawahara River originates from the west and the Kaminoda River from the south, flowing north through the village before joining the Tsue River at the northern end. Most of the village area is covered by forest and wilderness, and as the center of Hita's forestry industry, artificial afforestation has been thriving since ancient times, producing cedar and cypress. The area around Mt. Shuten-Doji is famous for its colonies of rhododendrons and Enkianthus campanulatus.
