Damokles

A man from the 4th century BC. A courtier of Dionysius I, the tyrant of Syracuse. He was famous as a flatterer. He praised the tyrant's good fortune, so the tyrant placed him on the throne and entertained him with a bare sword suspended from a horse's tail hair above his head, to make him realize that kings are always in danger. This story is known as the "Sword of Damocles" (which by extension means a state of close call). The phrase became particularly famous when U.S. President Kennedy used it in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September 1961, to talk about the dangers of accidental nuclear war.

紀元前4世紀の人。シラクーザの僭主(せんしゅ)ディオニシオス1世の廷臣。おべっか使いとして有名。彼が僭主の幸運を絶賛したので、僭主は彼を王座につかせ、その頭上に1本の馬の尾毛で抜き身の剣をつるして供応し、王者にはつねに危険が付きまとっていることを悟らせた故事が「ダモクレスの剣」として伝わる（転じて危機一髪の状態を意味する）。1961年9月、アメリカ大統領ケネディが国連総会で行った演説のなかでこのことばを用い、偶発核戦争などの危険について述べたことからとくに有名となった。
