Langobard

...a Germanic tribe. Also known as the Lombards. A tribe that first appeared in records in AD 5, living on the left bank of the lower Elbe River at the time. They began to move south in the early 5th century, and advanced into Pannonia (the area now occupied by the Republic of Hungary) in the early 6th century. They are known for appearing in the Lombardy region of northern Italy in 568 and founding the Lombard Kingdom. The kingdom reached its zenith under Kings Liutprand (reigned 712-744) and Aistulf (reigned 749-756), annexing the Byzantine territory of Ravenna and threatening Rome, but was defeated by Charlemagne in 774 and destroyed.
