Kamikoani [village] - Kamikoani

Japanese: 上小阿仁[村] - かみこあに

A village in Kitaakita County, central Akita Prefecture. Population 3,553 (1995). Located upstream of the Koani River, most of the village area is covered by forests, with only 3% being cultivated land. The Gojome Highway (now National Route 285) runs through Ozawada, in the center, and in early modern times it was an important transportation hub connecting Akita with the Ani mines. Although it is a remote mountain village, the area is rich in beautiful Akita cedar forests, and the natural forests of Kamiouchisawa National Forest are famous. Reforestation of village-owned forests has been carried out since the end of the Meiji period, and the village is rich in assets. Haginari Dam, the prefecture's first multipurpose dam, is located upstream of the Kamikoani River, and it is a scenic spot included in Taiheisan Prefectural Natural Park.

秋田県中部，北秋田郡の村。人口3553(1995)。小阿仁川上流に位置し，村域の大部分を山林が占め，耕地は3％にすぎない。中心の小沢田には五城目街道(現，国道285号線)が通り，近世，秋田と阿仁鉱山を結ぶ交通の要地であった。山間僻村であるが，一帯は秋田杉の美林が多く，上大内沢国有林の天然樹林が著名。明治末から村有林の造林が行われ，村有財産が豊かである。上小阿仁川上流には県営第1号の多目的ダム，萩形（はぎなり）ダムがあり，太平山県立自然公園に含まれる景勝地である。
