A city in northwestern Wisconsin, USA. Population 29,571 (1980). Located at the western end of Lake Superior, it is connected by bridge to Duluth, Minnesota, on the opposite shore. It was first explored by the French, and flourished after a fur trading post was established, but since iron ore was discovered nearby in the 1880s it has become an important export port. Today, it is home to shipbuilding, machinery, and oil refining industries, and is the western terminal for shipping grain, limestone, coal, and other products on the Great Lakes.
