Droysen - Johann Gustav Droysen

Droysen - Johann Gustav Droysen

German historian and politician. Born in Treptow, a small town in Pomerania. He was strongly influenced by the Enlightenment theology, the ideals of neo-humanism, and the Prussian Reformation. After entering the University of Berlin, he switched to classical philology and marked a new era in the study of Hellenism with his History of Alexander the Great (1833) and History of Hellenism (1836, 1843). After becoming a professor at the University of Kiel (1840), he shifted the focus of his research from ancient to modern times, while his interest in politics intensified. During the Revolution of 1848, he became a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly and represented the Little Germany faction, that is, the idea that Prussia should be the leader of German unification. His Political History of Prussia (1855-86) was the product of this political passion. After graduating from the University of Jena (1851), he moved to the University of Berlin, where he lectured on the Encyclopedia and Methodology of History. While Droysen's Hellenistic and Prussian histories have lost their luster today, his historical methodology continues to have a major influence to this day.
