...The cross section of the lichen body is circular, and from the outside, the cortex, medulla, and mid-axis are arranged in that order. The main types include U. diffracta Vain., whose lichen body has repeated bifurcated branches and many ring-shaped cracks in the cortex, and U. rubicunda Stirt., whose cortex has a red pigment. U. diffracta Vain. contains usnic acid, which is called pine nut or old man's beard and is used as a diuretic, antipyretic, and expectorant.
