Order Picidae, family Picoides. Some say it belongs to the genus Picoides . Total length 28cm. It is similar to the great spotted woodpecker, but larger and does not have a large white spot on its back. Males have red from the top of the head to the back of the head, while females are black. The back of the neck, back, and tail are black, and there is a white horizontal stripe from the middle to the back of the back. The lower back is dull white. The black eyebrows and jaw line are connected to the black band on the neck and surround the dull white face. The chest and belly are reddish brown and dull white, and the underbelly and lower tail cover are dark red. There are irregular black vertical stripes on the sides. It is distributed in a belt in the central part of the Eurasian continent, from the Scandinavian Peninsula and eastern Europe to southern Russia, Mongolia, northern East Asia, and the Kamchatka Peninsula. It lives in forests ranging from deciduous broadleaf forests to coniferous forests, and in Japan it lives mainly in broadleaf forests in mountainous areas of various places. It is generally less common than the great spotted woodpecker. The Amami Oshima subspecies, Plowstoni , was designated a national natural monument in 1971 and a national rare wild plant and animal in 1993.

キツツキ目キツツキ科。Picoides属とする意見もある。全長 28cm。アカゲラに似るが,それより大型で,背に大きな白斑がない。雄は頭上から後頭が赤く,雌は黒い。後頸,背面,尾は黒く,背の中央から後ろには白色の横縞模様がある。腰はくすんだ白色。黒い眉斑と顎線は頸側の黒帯に連なり,くすんだ白色の顔を囲んでいる。胸から腹は赤茶色にくすんだ白色で,下腹部と下尾筒は暗赤色。脇に黒色の縦斑が不規則にある。スカンジナビア半島,ヨーロッパ東部からロシア南部,モンゴル,東アジア北部,カムチャツカ半島に及ぶユーラシア大陸中央部に帯状に分布する。落葉広葉樹林から針葉樹林までの森林に生息し,日本では各地の山地のおもに広葉樹林にすむ。アカゲラに比べ全般にその数は少ない。奄美大島の亜種オーストンオオアカゲラ P.l.owstoni は 1971年国の天然記念物に,1993年国内希少野生動植物に指定された。
