An island in the southeastern Red Sea that is part of Yemen. It has an area of 57 km2 and a population of about 2,200. Its main industry is fishing, and its main product is dried fish. It became a British colony in 1915, and since 1967 has been part of the former South Yemen. During the British rule, it was a bustling stopover point for pilgrims on the way to Mecca, and had an airport and quarantine station, but now military facilities are located there and it is off-limits to the general public. Remains of a fort and city walls from the Ottoman Empire era remain on the island. [Shiojiri Kazuko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
