An indigenous tribe of about 300 people living in the upper Xingu River basin in northern Mato Grosso State, Brazil, South America. They live within Xingu National Park (designated in 1961), an indigenous reserve established through the dedication of Brother Villas Boas. Their language belongs to the Tupi language family. They practice slash-and-burn agriculture, mainly using poisonous manioc, as well as hunting, fishing, and gathering. They have only one village, with several large houses surrounding a large square. In addition to Tupi, tribes speaking Arawak and Carib languages also coexist in the upper Xingu River basin, but they all belong to a single cultural sphere.
