A Florentine politician and wealthy man. He became head of the Medici family in 1429 and opposed the old family clans with the support of the emerging citizenry. He was temporarily exiled by his political opponents in 1433, but he used his wealth to control the city government and reigned as a de facto tyrant. While he sought to become wealthy by making huge loans to the Pope and princes, he also invested his own fortune in public works and the protection of arts and sciences, making Florence the center of the Renaissance. After his death, he was posthumously awarded the title "Father of the Country" by the government. → Related articles Cellini | Medici Medici→ Related article Michelangelo Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
