Viburnum - Viburnum

A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family (APG classification: Viburnum family). It is 2-4 meters tall. Many flowers bloom in early summer and emit a unique scent that attracts many insects. The fruits are spherical, red, ripe, and sour. The branches are hard to break, so they are used as handles for tools. The name is said to come from this, with "gama" meaning sickle and "zumi" meaning sour fruit. It grows on hills and mountains, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as the Korean peninsula and China. The genus Viburnum is distributed in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere, some in the tropical highlands, and even in South America, and about 200 species are known, but the main distribution is in East Asia, including Japan and China. The flowers and fruits are beautiful, and many are planted for decoration, such as the coral tree, the Japanese quince, the Japanese quince, the Japanese quince, the Japanese quince, and the Japanese quince. Many of the fruits are edible, and in some areas the bark is used as a sedative and the leaves are made into tea.

スイカズラ科（APG分類：ガマズミ科）の落葉低木。高さ2～4メートル。花は初夏、多数集まって開き、特有のにおいを出すため、多くの虫が集まる。果実は球形で、赤く熟し、酸っぱいが食べられる。枝は折れにくいため、道具類の柄(え)とする。名はこれに由来するとされ、ガマは鎌(かま)で、ズミは酸っぱい実の意味であるとされる。丘や山地に生え、北海道から九州、さらに朝鮮半島、中国に分布する。ガマズミ属は北半球の温帯から暖帯に、一部が熱帯高地、さらに南アメリカに分布し、約200種が知られるが、日本や中国を含めた東アジアが分布の中心である。花や実が美しく、サンゴジュ、ゴモジュ、ヤブデマリ、カンボク、オオカメノキ（ムシカリ）など観賞用に植えるものが多い。果実は食べられるものが多く、樹皮を鎮静剤とし、葉を茶とする地方がある。
