Robert (Bob) Feller

American mathematician. Born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, he graduated from the University of Zagreb in 1925, and in 1926, at the age of 20, he was awarded a doctorate from the University of Göttingen in Germany. In 1928, he was appointed director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics at the University of Kiel, but in 1933 he moved to Stockholm and became affiliated with the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Institute of Experimental Biology. In 1939, he moved to the United States, and taught at Brown University and Cornell University, and in 1950 he became a professor at Princeton University. During this time, he mainly devoted himself to the study of probability theory, and made outstanding achievements in the applications of limit theorems, Markov processes, and stochastic process theory, but he is particularly famous for his analytical research on one-dimensional diffusion processes.

アメリカの数学者。ユーゴスラビアのザグレブに生まれ，1925年ザグレブ大学を卒業，26年，20歳にしてドイツのゲッティンゲン大学から学位を授与される。28年キール大学応用数学研究所長に任ぜられたが，33年にはストックホルムに移り，数理統計学研究所，実験生物学研究所に籍をおいた。39年アメリカに移住し，ブラウン大学，コーネル大学，50年からはプリンストン大学教授となった。この間主として確率論の研究に専念し，極限定理，マルコフ過程，確率過程論の応用についてすぐれた業績を残したが，なかでも一次元拡散過程の解析的研究は有名である。
