1906‐70 American mathematician. Born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, he graduated from the University of Zagreb in 1925, and in 1926, at the age of 20, he was awarded a doctorate from the University of Göttingen in Germany. In 1928, he was appointed director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics at the University of Kiel, but in 1933 he moved to Stockholm and became affiliated with the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Institute of Experimental Biology. In 1939, he moved to the United States, and taught at Brown University and Cornell University, and in 1950 he became a professor at Princeton University. During this time, he mainly devoted himself to the study of probability theory, and made outstanding achievements in the applications of limit theorems, Markov processes, and stochastic process theory, but he is particularly famous for his analytical research on one-dimensional diffusion processes.
