Starfish - Starfish

Japanese: イトマキヒトデ - いとまきひとで
Starfish - Starfish

A marine animal belonging to the family Pectinidae, class Asteroidea, phylum Echinodermata. It is a thick, pentagonal, spool-shaped starfish with irregular cloud-like red spots scattered across a blue-blue background, but some are tinged with blue-green or are almost entirely red-orange. The underside is uniformly yellow-orange. It has the habit of inflating its stomach and pushing it out of its mouth, crawling around rocks and aquaculture rafts to feed on fish and shellfish. It is commonly seen on the coasts of various places from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also found in Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and the coasts of northern China. Similar species include the small Pectinidae, the Togeitoman, and the Nunomate Pectinidae, all of which are small species with diameters of 2 to 3 centimeters or less.
