Baden-Baden (English spelling)

A city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. Population 53,000 (1991). Many sanatoriums and hospitals use the hot springs (radioactive salt springs) as a health resort, and it is also a tourist destination with theaters, art museums, a horse racetrack and a gambling hall. The hot springs have been known since Roman times, and in the 16th century there were 12 bathhouse owners with about 400 baths, and a health resort tax was introduced. From the 12th to 17th centuries, it was the residence of the Margrave of Baden. It has suffered many wars but has been rebuilt, and in the 19th century it became an international health resort. German Emperor Wilhelm I has been a guest for the past 40 years, and Wagner, Turgenev, Gogol, and Dostoevsky have also visited.

ドイツ南西部，バーデン･ビュルテンベルク州の都市。人口5万3000(1991)。保養地として温泉(放射性食塩泉)を利用した療養所や病院が多く，劇場，美術館，競馬場，賭博場をもつ観光地でもある。温泉はローマ時代から知られ，16世紀には約400の浴槽をもつ12の浴場主がおり，保養税が導入された。12～17世紀，バーデン辺境伯の居住地。何度も戦禍をうけたが復興し，19世紀に国際的保養地となる。ドイツ皇帝ウィルヘルム1世は40年来の賓客で，ワーグナー，ツルゲーネフ，ゴーゴリ，ドストエフスキーらも訪れた。
