A stepped platform, usually located to the right of the mihrab in a mosque, from which verses from the Quran are recited during congregational prayer. It is believed to have originated as the platform on which Muhammad preached, and gradually the number of steps increased to six to nine or more. In early times it also served as a platform for rulers to speak, but during the Abbasid period it became purely religious and formalized. Most are made of wood with carvings and are movable, but there are also fixed stone or brick ones decorated with marble, stucco, or mosaics.
