A stepped platform, usually located to the right of the mihrab in a mosque, from which verses from the Quran are recited during congregational prayer. It is believed to have originated as the platform on which Muhammad preached, and gradually the number of steps increased to six to nine or more. In early times it also served as a platform for rulers to speak, but during the Abbasid period it became purely religious and formalized. Most are made of wood with carvings and are movable, but there are also fixed stone or brick ones decorated with marble, stucco, or mosaics. モスクにおいて通常ミフラーブの向って右に設けられる,階段のついた高壇。会衆礼拝のときここから『コーラン』の1節が唱えられる。ムハンマドが説教のとき上った台が起源とされ,徐々に段数が増し6~9段,もしくはそれ以上にもなった。初期には為政者の演説壇も兼ねたが,アッバース朝時代に純粋に宗教的なものとなり形式化した。彫刻の施された木造の移動可能のものが多いが,大理石,スタッコ (化粧漆喰) ,モザイクで装飾された固定式の石造,煉瓦造のものもある。
