Tango Chirimen (Tango Crepe)

Japanese: 丹後ちりめん(丹後縮緬) - たんごちりめん

White crepe is a base fabric for dyeing and processing produced in Tango Province (Kyoto Prefecture). The wrinkles that give the fabric a three-dimensional beauty are created by weaving tightly twisted weft threads and then refining them. Tango originally produced Seigo and Tsumugi, but in the first half of the 18th century, techniques were introduced from Nishijin in Kyoto, and crepe began to be actively produced in towns and villages under the three territories of Miyazu Domain, Mineyama Domain, and Kumihama Daikansho. Crepe made from Oshu Fukushima thread was sent by courier to Kyoto wholesalers organized by a stock association, where it was dyed, processed, and sold on consignment.

丹後国(京都府)に産する染め加工下地の白ちりめん。生地に立体的な美しさを出す皺（しぼ）は，強撚の緯糸を用いて織り，それを精練して生じさせる。丹後はもともと精好（せいごう），つむぎなどを産していたが，18世紀前半に京都の西陣から技法を導入し，宮津藩，峰山藩，久美浜代官所3領下の町村で盛んにちりめんを生産するようになった。奥州福島糸を原料としたちりめんは株仲間を組織する京問屋へ飛脚によって送られ，染色･加工のうえ委託販売に付された。
